Heritage Lottery Fund

Final Exhibition Event

Liverpool Central Library

June 2018

THE BIRTH OF CLUB RUGBY, the Liverpool St Helens Heritage Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund ended its main programme, comprising a touring  Exhibition of libraries in St.Helens and Liverpool, with an outstanding event at Liverpool Central Library in June 2018 led by Fran Cotton and attended by  a large number of supporters, contributors and club members.

Fran shared some of his memories of a “hugely enjoyable” four seasons at the Liverpool Club where he learnt many things to do and what not to do, that helped him in his later career. He was joined by former players and England Internationals Kevin Simms and David Roughley in unveiling memorabilia from the club’s long and rich past.

Assembled guests heard about the different aspects of the project including the comprehensive Club archive built at Liverpool Record Office by the Project Archivist Vicki Caren with our HLF grant; and is now permanently housed at the Record Office, Liverpool Central Library, whose invaluable practical support and help to the project has been greatly appreciated.

Dave Bixter, the Project’s Educational Co-ordinator showcased the work undertaken with over 600 primary schoolchildren in 25 schools throughout St Helens and Liverpool.

Our North West region HLF Case Officer, Nick Herepath, was also in attendance and praised the quality of our project.

A final closure of the launch programme took place at the home of Liverpool St Helens FC, Moss Lane, in the Autumn of 2018.

The exhibition is now scheduled to be displayed in Edge Hill University,  Cowley International College,  St. Helens Central Library/St Helens College late 2019/early 2020.

Further out an exhibition is planned for the Museum of Liverpool (Pier Head) as soon a space becomes available.
