LIVERPOOOL ST HELENS 24 TYLDESLEY 18 (27/01/2018)

For the second week running Liverpool St Helens found themselves in a close encounter. On this occasion though, instead of coming from behind as at Southport, they led from the front doing just enough in the first hour in workmanlike fashion to withstand a spirited Tyldesley finish.

They did however, start badly when the visitors took an early lead in the 9th minute when a quickly taken tap penalty caught the LSH defence napping leading to the opening try. 0-5. LSH immediately replied with a try of their own when Dan Webster, growing in stature with every game, broke through to find Mark Potter, playing in a make-shift role as hooker due to Chris Houlton’s hand injury, in support. Potter made no mistake in galloping the twenty or so yards to touchdown. 5-5.

With both sides looking to claim territory and both with fine distance kickers in Dan Filson and Tyldesley’s Mark Dickinson, the game became a stalemate until the 34th minute when a concerted LSH attack saw the ever-reliable Adam Gore dive over from short range. Dan Filson converted for a half time score of 12-5.

Tyldesley started the second half strongly and reduced the arrears after four minutes with a try after a well-executed catch and drive by the right corner flag. 12-10. This only served to signal LSH’s best period of the game in which the impressive Filson delivered a delightful try to stretch their lead. Collecting the ball on the half-way line he glided and dummied past a line of Tyldesley defenders to score under the posts and convert his own try. 19-10. Spurred on, LSH enjoyed possession and territory with flanker Rob Mitchell making it tell in the 61st minute by crashing over for the bonus point try. 24-10.

As all afternoon the visitors continued to pose a threat and set up a close finish when producing another fine catch and drive to score in the 78th minute. 24-15. There was still time for LSH to concede a penalty, gratefully received and kicked by Tyldesley, 24-18 to give them a very well deserved losing bonus point.
